OUR WINES

Wine with Asian food is always a controversial subject – so we spent an evening, matching wines with our food just to set the record straight. We probably drank and ate too much but had great fun doing so. A cool, quenching glass of our Domaine Wachau Riesling won out with the Wynns Riesling a close second, but what we were delighted about was that most wines held up well and the others did not make the list.

Wine also has a role to play in such a marriage of flavours. Normally, everyone swings to the white option as it cools the palate with the chilli heat. But, the idea that red wine goes with Asian food is far from far fetched.

One of our favorite whites at the moment is the Les Jamelles Viognier which proved a hit with the fiery tastes of our Thai appetizers and various dipping sauces. The New Zealand Huia Sauvignon Blanc bursting with exotic fruits really rose to the challenge. Pinot Grigio also worked well.

The velvety softness of our Les Jamelles Pinot Noir was an unexpected success, as well. Too often wine aficionados go overboard in their rules for red wines with Asian foods. No tannin as in shiraz/syrah/hermitage, caution some, yet this rule clearly conflicts with the Chinese marriage of food with tannic tea. Also, a great match was the Cedar Creek Shiraz Cabernet which matched the Massaman curry brilliantly. Also, bubbles are good for the soul and worked surprisingly well. Our Massotina prosecco was delightful and if you were celebrating, champagne would be a real treat as long as you don’t go too hot on the spice guide.

So what did we learn? We decided that pinot noir, a shiraz, Cotes du Rhone, Grenache, unwooded chardonnay, gruner veltliner, gewürztraminer and the semillion-sauvignon blanc blend all go really well with this food, but then we like these styles of wines with other foods also. So check out the list, drink what you like and enjoy it. Cheers.
